DJ Makala | Museo Guggenheim | Forum D’Avignon Bilbao 2014

5 to 8 March 2014 – Alhóndiga Bilbao

The city as cultural ecosystem. What is a cultural ecosystem made of? Public and private actors, institutions, spaces, practices, citizens, visitors… In our western ‘cultural ecosystems’, the divide between public and private spheres was one of the key issues for cultural action. With the passing of time, this dichotomy became an outdated concept as the two sectors started cooperating with one another. We want to use real experiences to assess the relationship between the two.

Bilbao is a cultural ecosystem with inspiring encounters and action for residents and visitors. Since the city’s urban and economic transformation, Bilbao has been linked with concepts such as excellence, economic activity, knowledge, art, technology, design and creativity.

Culture is a driving force for development and welfare; it fosters innovation and creativity, and can create icons that contribute to increase global competitiveness.

With this aim in mind, the 2014 Forum d’Avignon Bilbao is to explore the potential of cities as cultural ecosystems.

5 March, 2014 21:00 – 23:00
Reception in Guggenheim Bilbao Museum
Musical entertainment: DJ Makala

Elkano Browning Cream “Bohemia” (Makala Remix) included on “Copperdollar, The Back Of Beyond” Album Compilation

Includes music from: Quantic, Renegades Of Jazz, The Colman Brothers, Al Lindrum, Omegaman, Solo Moderna, Palov, DJ Farrapo, Lemon, Kidboy, Frederik Bowling, Lucho Bermudez, Wara, Elkano Browning Cream, Benji Boko, Boy Com and more…

After a lot of planning ‘Copperdollar, The Back Of Beyond’ is finally here…. It’s a fantastic 15 track digipack CD and download compilation album put together in collaboration with long-time friends Copperdollar, the award-winning performance company.

Copperdollar are known for their cutting-edge and mixed-media immersive theatre productions inspired by Mexico’s Day Of The Dead and we’ve watched them grow over the years to become a justly popular and surreal fixture at numerous UK music festivals. They rightly won the audience-voted Favourite Event at the Brighton Fringe Festival in 2012 and continue to attract a dedicated cult following from everyone lucky enough to have stumbled across their after-hours tent in the eponymous Back Of Beyond.

Difficult to describe, but impossible to forget.

The CD features some obscure but dance-ably infectious music from their live shows. It is compiled with care by their resident DJ, Marc Stylus. Much like the theatre company themselves, the music takes elements of traditional latin and hispanic music and places them firmly in a 21st century context. The overall effect is exotic but with a modern twist; The listener carried into a hypnotic world of transcendent beats, basslines and the irresistable vitality that, ironically, only a celebration of the afterlife could bring

ABOUT COPPERDOLLAR: Originally commissioned by Glastonbury Festival (after playing a key role in creating the notorious Lost Vagueness which is where our paths first crossed), Copperdollar have since performed at Brighton Fringe, The National Theatre, Bestival, Boomtown and many more. The release of this compilation marks a new milestone in the history of the Company and showcases the unique musical heritage at the heart of their performances.

Catch them live at Glastonbury later this year, or experience a special album launch taster event with MOVIMIENTOS at London’s Passing Clouds on 21st February 2014.

Remix Tailerra Ordiziako Jakintza Ikastolan

Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna ospatzeko DJ Makala eta Antxon Sarasua gonbidatu ditugu ikastolara. Maila horretako bi musikari euskaldun ikastolan izanda, DBH3 eta DBH4ko ikasleekin DJ tailer bat egin dugu.

Egun osoan zehar lanketa ezberdinak egiten aritu gara. Goizean, tailerrarekin hasi aurretik, DJ Makalak ospatzen ari ginen egunarekin zerikusia duen sorpresa bat aurkeztu digu; euskara ikasteko duela ia 50 urte argitaraturiko binilo diska zahar bat!. Tailerrari hasiera emateko, sekuentziadore baten oinarriak azaldu dizkigute. Jarraian, gelatan ikasleek aukeratutako abesti baten remix-ak sortzen aritu gara. Arratsaldean, aldiz, goizean egindako lanari hitzak jarri eta abestia osatu dugu, azken erritmo elektronikoak gure hitzei moldatuz.

Egun bikaina pasatu dugu musika lantzeko gaur egun dauden aplikazio ezberdinekin jolastuz.

Eskerrik asko benetan Mikel eta Antxon!!

Epic track ‘Pretty Cliche’ from the WARA EP on Movimientos Records has made its mark as a live favourite and as one of the first tracks ever to blend Cumbia with Cuban Timba and Hip Hop – a true Latin-London style mash up!! Both our remixers bring their own unmistakeable dancefloor sensibility to proceedings with Makala giving it a Cumbia-Moombahton type treatment and Palov infusing the track with big Afro-dancehall bounce.

The Remixers:

A prolific DJ, musician, producer and remixer who’s been on the scene for two decades, playing massive clubs and festivals across Europe. A stalwart of the ever excellent Lovemonk Records with several releases and a recent album, ‘Unexpected Tapas’, on the label. Makala also hosts monthly Global Funk Parties in his local Basque Country with the likes of Alice Russell & TM Juke, Nickodemus, & Daniel Haaksman. His production styles veer from Spanish rumba beats, gypsy swing, funk and jazz to more tropical sounds like latin, boogaloo, cumbia and ska, seamlessly combined with modern electronics.

With a style that blends latin flavours, block breaks, exotic soul, cumbia, swing and tropicalismo, Palov’s reputation continues to soar following a highly acclaimed series of E.P releases with his partner Mishkin (as production duo Palov & Mishkin) for labels like Gamm, Resence, Scribble, Rebtuz. He’s also remixed for The Hot 8 Brass Band and Lovemonk’s Más Achilifunk – Gipsy Soul From 21st Century. He recently launched his own label Carnibal bringing more funky tropical beats and mash ups.
